Here is your month in review

This month, we expressed ourselves with poetry, explored new frontiers in education, became better stewards of the Earth, celebrated our diverse community and took a gastronomic world tour without even leaving the Dome! In case you missed it, here is just a taste of what we got up to in April.

United Nations Flag Parade and the International Food Festival

·

On 21 April Wellington pupils, parents and teachers came together to celebrate the diversity of our community once again with our annual United Nations Flag Parade and International Food Festival. Wellingtonians represented their home countries in a procession on the track. Overhead, the flags of every nation and territory represented by our families flapped in the wind as anthems filled the air. Shortly thereafter, the event quickly moved into the Dome, where culinary creations from all around the world awaited. It was an opportunity to celebrate both what makes us unique as well as what we have in common while sharing in one of the most powerful expressions of a culture, its food.

Poetry Slam

··

Our Upper Prep pupils stepped up to the microphone in the Blackbox Theatre in mid-April for a Poetry Slam. This was a powerful showcase of personal expression and creative talent. The event was not only a celebration of artistic expression but also an opportunity for pupils to embody the Wellington Values of Courage and Kindness. By sharing their personal experiences and vulnerabilities, pupils demonstrated great courage, while the supportive and inclusive atmosphere of the event exemplified the Value of Kindness. It was a memorable and inspiring event, highlighting the power of self-expression and community support.

A walk in Qiantan Park

···

With the weather warming up, it was a perfect time for a walk in the park. So, our pupils in Nursery and Reception did just that. They went on an outing to nearby Qiantan Park, where they had the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and appreciate the blossoms and newly unfurled foliage.

The 6th Wellington College China Festival of Education

Swipe Left

Wellington College China held yet another successful edition of its Festival of Education. Wellington Shanghai hosted nearly 40 thought leaders in education along with over 800 attendees. This year’s theme was ‘Collaboration in Education’, and it set the tone for a day of inspiring and informative talks, panel discussions and workshops that explored questions like “What will schools look like in the future?“, “How do we promote positive parent-school relationships?”, “What impact does wellbeing have on educational outcomes?” and so much more. Entertainment throughout the day came courtesy of our talented Wellington Arts Scholars, who treated guests to dance performances, a string quartet and even a rock band.

Earth Month Activities

April was Earth Month, and our Senior School and Upper Prep Charity Committee went all out to raise awareness and funds for several worthy environmental causes. One of the highlights was a visit from Shanghai Roots & Shoots, who shared the Million Tree Project and other initiatives to fight desertification. Our pupils also organised an Earth-themed bake sale which raised a tidy sum for our eco-charities. Then there was our Mother Earth-themed dress-up day, which saw our pupils donning their best eco-friendly outfits and donating 10 RMB to our charity partners. Our Upper Prep pupils ended the month in style with their 'Jazz It Up' event. They gave old shirts and tote bags a new lease on life by revamping them with iron-on patches, glitter and fabric paint. Meanwhile, our Senior School Charity Committee is doing their bit to reduce waste and consumption with their 'Wellington Thrift Store', where pupils can purchase previously owned clothing items. It is all about the 3 Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle!

E-motion

Continuing their work with leading theatre professionals from across the world, our Drama Scholars performed E-Motion on 14 April in the Blackbox Theatre. Working alongside Michelle Mishmak from Frantic Assembly, they performed a devised piece of theatre based on strong emotions. Interweaving stylised and choreographed movement, monologues and music, the performance wove together a tapestry of emotional responses to the idea of home and desires. The performance was developed between October and April and drew on the Scholars’ experiences, taking the audience on a challenging, visceral journey. By collaborating with leading directors, designers and writers our Scholars expanded their horizons and gained valuable experience of working alongside professional artists in a range of styles and settings.
