Dear Friends of CCG,

As we move towards the end of a year unlike any other, all of us at the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) here in Beijing would like to wish you a safe, healthy, and prosperous new year for 2021.

2020 was a year of unprecedented change and challenges for everyone across the globe. The outbreak of COVID-19 disrupted our daily lives and impeded global connectivity. In the face of such challenges, we would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude for your continuing support and highlight some of our achievements over this past year, as CCG sought to boost international dialogue through online activities and develop new multilateral capacities to address the pandemic.

International Events

In 2020, amidst challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, CCG held more than 60 webinars both in Chinese and English, covering a wide range of topics, including China-US non-governmental anti-pandemic cooperation, global governance and cooperation in public health, international education, multilateral cooperation, global talent mobility, and food security. These events brought together hundreds of leading experts, top think-tankers, scholars, senior representatives from chambers of commerce, and policymakers from institutions in different countries.

According to the figures shown on CCG‘s multimedia platforms, there are almost ten million audiencs at home and abroad watching the webinars.

CCG also continued to develop our flagship events. Nine roundtable seminars focusing on key topics were held during the Sixth China and Globalization Forum, a two-day event hosted from November 11-12. Participants included former senior policymakers, ambassadors to China, heads of international organizations, representatives of chambers of commerce, leaders from business, academia, and research, and noted scholars and entrepreneurs from China and abroad. We also hosted the Fifth China Global Think Tank Innovation Forum in November. In September, we held the Seventh China Inbound-Outbound Forum and launched an initiative to establish a network for international chambers of commerce at the forum.

In December, CCG held the Ambassadors Roundtable on "China and the World in the Period of China’s 14th Five Year Plan." This event brought together diplomats from around 60 countries to discuss new opportunities for international cooperation under the 14th Five-Year Plan (FYP), and ways to strengthen cooperation between China and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Furthermore, CCG launched the Global Young Leaders Dialogue (GYLD) Program in December, which is designed to nurture the development of opinion leaders from diverse regions, sectors, disciplines, cultural and professional backgrounds.

In 2020, CCG representatives participated and contributed to numerous high-level international forums, such as the 56th Munich Security Conference (MSC). As MSC’s only non-govermental Chinese partner, CCG co-hosted a dinner on the theme of “US-China Cold War? Myth and Reality” with the MSC. John Kerry, former US secretary of State, delivered special addresses ; CCG and Center of Excellence for Operations in Confined and Shallow Waters (COE CSW) of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) also co-organized a side event under the theme of “Bridging troubled waters - alleviating conflict potential in the South China Sea” .

Research and Publications

To promote international anti-pandemic cooperation, CCG released the report China-US non-governmental cooperation in response to COVID-19: Current conditions, challenges and prospects, and the report Strengthen multi-level international cooperation to fight the pandemic.

In addition to pandemic-related reports, CCG also released the following publications: Report on Chinese International Migration (2020), 2020 Bluebook Report on Chinese International Schools,University Alumni Insight: Chinese Graduate Career Development Prospects 2020, the 2020 Bluebook Report on Chinese Enterprise Globalization, 2020 Global Enterprises Report: MNC New Development in China, the Report on Development of Overseas Chinese Entrepreneurs 2019, and the Chinese edition of World Immigration Report 2020.

Awards and Recognition

CCG is consistently considered the leading non-governmental think tank in authoritative evaluations within the Chinese think tank community. In 2020, CCG once again entered the top 100 think tanks comprehensive rankings in the “2019 Global Go To Think Tank Index” released by the University of Pennsylvania Think Tank and Civil Society Program (TTCSP), becoming the only Chinese non-governmental think tank to feature in the top 100 list for three consecutive years.

This year, despite difficulties brought by the pandemic, CCG has been blessed with much support and valuable contributions from our global network. We would like to express deep gratitude to everyone who has participated for their passion and determination in promoting international dialogue through a wide-ranging series of webinars and online events. Looking to 2021, we will continue to dedicate ourselves to high-quality research and fulfilling our mission to facilitate multilateral cooperation between China and the world. We wish you all the best and hope you stay safe and healthy in the coming year.

The internationalization of Chinese enterprises is one of the most notable aspects of economic globalization in the 21st century. Despite the 2008 financial crisis and weak global outbound investment, under the “go global“ initiative, Chinese outbound investment has gone from strength to strength, while also diversifying in terms of investment modalities, destinations, and industries. This book offers the most comprehensive, up-to-date assessment of China’s domestic and international migration.
