It's a privilege[荣幸], a rare privilege of a lifetime to be with you today. And I can’t think thank you enough for making me an honorary colonial.

You know, this is really an amazing place. And for a lot of you, I’m sure that being here in Washington, the very center of our democracy[民主，民主主义；民主政治], was a big draw when you were choosing which school to go to. This place has a powerful pull. It was here that Dr. Martin Luther King[马丁路德金] challenged Americans to make real the promises of democracy, to make justice a reality for all of God's children.

And it was here that President Ronald Reagan[里根总统] called on us to believe in ourselves and to believe in our capacity[能力；容量] to perform great deeds[成就一番事业]. I'd like to start this morning by telling you about my first visit here. In the summer of 1977,yes, summer a little old. I was 16 years old and living in Robertsdale[罗伯茨代尔], the small town in southern Alabama[阿拉巴马州] that I grew up in. At the end of my junior year of high school I’d won an essay contest sponsored by the National Rural Electric Association. I can't remember what the essay was about, but what I do remember very clearly is writing it by hand, draft after draft after draft. Typewriters were very expensive and my family could not afford one.

I was one of two kids from Baldwin County[鲍德温县] that was chosen to go to Washington along with hundreds of other kids across the country. Before we left, the Alabama delegation[阿拉巴马州代表团] took a trip to our state capital in Montgomery[蒙哥马利] for a meeting with the governor. The governor's name was George C. Wallace. The same George Wallace who in 1963 stood in the school house door at the University of Alabama to block African Americans[非裔美国人] from enrolling. Wallace embraced the evils of segregation[拥护邪恶的种族隔离主义]. He pitted[把…放进坑内；挖坑于；使留下疤痕] whites against blacks, the South against the North, the working class against the so called elites[精英]. Meeting my governor was not an honor for me.

My heroes in life were Dr. Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy[罗伯特·肯尼迪], who had fought against the very things that Wallace stood for. Keep in mind, that I grew up, or, when I grew up, I grew up in a place where King and Kennedy were not exactly held in high esteem[深受尊敬]. When I was a kid, the South was still coming to grips[紧握;夹紧;掌控] with its history. My textbook even said the Civil War[南北战争] was about states' rights. They barely mentioned slavery[奴役；奴隶制度；奴隶身分].

So I had to figure out[解决；算出；想出；理解；断定] for myself what was right and true. It was a search. It was a process. It drew on the moral sense[道德观念] that I learnt from my parents, and in church, and in my own heart, and led me on my own journey of discovery. I found books in the public library that they probably didn't know they had. They all pointed to the fact that Wallace was wrong. That injustices[不公正；不讲道义] like segregation[隔离，分离；种族隔离] had no place in our world. That equality is a right.

因此我只能依靠自己来寻求真理，这是一段寻找的过程和经历。我通过汲取父母的道德观念，或来自宗教信仰，以及跟随自己的内心想法去寻求想要的。我发现公共图书馆的书籍都指出华莱士的错误，他们可能不知道自己图书馆有这样的书吧！我们的世界不应该存在不公平和种族隔离，平等是一种权利。

As I said, I was only 16 when I met Governor Wallace, so I shook his hand as we were expected to do. But shaking his hand felt like a betrayal[背叛；辜负；暴露] of my own beliefs. It felt wrong. Like I was selling a piece of my soul.

From Montgomery we flew to Washington. It was the first time I had ever been on an airplane. In fact it was the first time that I’d ever traveled out of the south. On June 15, 1977, I was one of 900 high schoolers greeted by the new president, President Jimmy Carter[吉米·卡特（美国第39届总统，2002年诺贝尔和平奖获得者）], on the south lawn of the White House, right there on the other side of the ellipse. I was one of the lucky ones, who got to shake his hand.

Carter saw Baldwin County on my name tag[胸牌；名称标签] that day and stopped to speak with me. He wanted to know how people were doing after the rash storms that struck Alabama that year. Carter was kind and compassionate[慈悲的；富于同情心的]. He held the most powerful job in the world but he had not sacrificed any of his humanity[人类；人道；仁慈；人文学科]. I felt proud that he was president. And I felt proud that he was from the South.

In the space of[在…距离内] a week, I came face to face with two men who were guaranteeing themselves a place in history. They came from the same region. They were from the same political party. They were both governors of adjoining states. But they looked at the world in very different ways. It was clear to me, that one was right, and one was wrong.

Wallace had built his political career by exploiting divisions between us. Carter's message on the other hand, was that we are all bound together[都联系在一起],every one of us. My own journey in life was just beginning. I hadn't even applied for college yet at that point. For you graduates, the process of discovering yourself, of inventing yourself, of reinventing yourself is about to begin in earnest[认真的；诚挚地；正经的]. It's about finding your values and committing to live by them. You have to find your North Star. And that means choices. Some are easy. Some are hard. And some will make you question everything.

当时我的人生旅程才刚刚开始。我当时甚至还没申请大学。对你们这些毕业生来说，毕业的过程就是发现你自己的过程，发掘自己的过程，重新发现自己的过程，这些都即将展开。这关系到你的价值观，关系地以后为何而活，你要找到自己的北极星。那意味着你必须做出选择，有时候很容易，有时候却很难，有时候会让你质疑一切。

Twenty years after my visit to Washington, I met someone who made me question everything. Who upended[颠倒，倒置；使竖立] all of my assumptions in the very best way. That was Steve Jobs.

在拜访华盛顿20年后，我遇到了让我质疑一切的人，他用最好的方式终结了我所有的假设，他就是乔布斯。

Steve had built a successful company. He had been sent away[发送；派遣；解雇；驱逐] and he returned to find it in ruins[成为废墟；严重受损的]. He didn't know it at the time, but he was about to dedicate[致力；献身；题献] the rest of his life to rescuing it, and leading it to heights greater than anyone could ever imagine. Anyone, that is, except for Steve. Most people have forgotten, but in 1997 and early 1998, Apple had been adrift[随波逐流地；漂浮着] for years, rudderless[无舵的；无指导者的]. But Steve thought Apple could be great again. And he wanted to know if I’d like to help.

His vision[愿景] for Apple was a company that turned powerful technology into tools that were easy to use, tools that would help people realize their dreams and change the world for the better. I had studied to be an engineer and earned an M.B.A. I was trained to be pragmatic[实际的；实用主义的；国事的], a problem solver. Now I found myself sitting before and listening to this very animated[活生生的；活泼的；愉快的] 40-something[表示“大概”] guy with visions of changing the world. It was not what I had expected. You see, when it came to my career, in 1998, I was also adrift, rudderless.

I knew who I was in my personal life, and I kept my eye on my North Star, my responsibility to do good for someone else, other than myself. But at work, well I always figured that work was work. Values had their place and, yes, there were things that I wanted to change about the world, but I thought I had to do that on my own time, not in the office.

我很清楚自己生活中的角色，并且一直专注着自己的目标。我的责任就是为他人创造美好的东西。但我觉得工作就是工作，价值有它该存在的地方，是的，我想要改变世界，但我认为应该要在我自己的时间做这件事，而不是在办公室里。

Steve didn't see it that way. He was an idealist. And in that way he reminded me of how I felt as a teenager. In that first meeting he convinced me that if we worked hard and made great products, we too could help change the world. And to my surprise, I was hooked[被迷住;上瘾;钩状的；吸毒成瘾的；入迷的]. I took the job and changed my life. It's been 17 years and I have never once looked back.

然而乔布斯并不这么认为，他是个理想主义者，他用他的方式唤起了我青年时代的雄心壮志。第一次面谈时，他说服我说，如果我们努力工作，推出更好的产品，我们也能改变世界。令我惊讶的是，我被他说服了，我接受他的邀请，这改变了我的生活。17年来，我从未后悔过。

At Apple we believe the work should be more than just about improving your own self. It's about improving the lives of others as well. Our products do amazing things. And just as Steve envisioned[展望;预期], they’ve empowered[允许；授与权力] people all over the world. People who are blind, and need information read to them because they can't see the screen. People for whom technology is a lifeline[生命线；救生索] because they are isolated[孤立的；分离的；单独的] by distance or disability. People who witness injustice[不公正；不讲道义] and want to expose[揭露，揭发；使曝光；显示] it, and now they can because they have a camera in their pocket all the time.

在苹果我们相信工作不只是改善自己的生活，同时也要改善其他人的生活。我们的产品令人惊叹。如同乔布斯所预想的，它们给世界各地许多人带来了便利。比如苹果的技术帮助盲人实现阅读，盲人无法看见屏幕，苹果的技术可以将信息朗读出来。对那些受距离、残疾困扰而被孤立的人来说，技术是信息的救生绳索。再比如，那些遭遇社会不公，并想要揭露它们的人们，现在他已经可以做到了，因为他们的口袋中随时有一个相机。

Our commitment goes beyond the products themselves, to how they’re made, to our impact on the environment, to the role we play in demanding and promoting equality and in improving education. We believe that a company that has values and acts on them can really change the world. And an individual can too. That can be you. That must be you.

我们不仅关注产品的品质，也关注产品的生产过程，还有我们对环境的影响力，我们对产品质量的执着和我们在教育领域的贡献。我们相信，一家公司的价值观及其指导下的行为，可以真正改变世界。一个人也可以，这个人可能是你，而且必须是你。

Graduates, your values matter. They are your North Star. And work takes on[承担；呈现；具有；流行] new meaning when you feel you are pointed in the right direction. Otherwise, it's just a job, and life is too short for that. We need the best and brightest of your generation to lead in government and in business, in the science and in the arts, in journalism and in academia[学术界；学术生涯].

毕业生们，你们的价值观很重要。它们是你们的北极星。当你感受到自己走在对的道路上，工作将赋予你新的意义。否则，它就是只是一份温饱的工作，而人生苦短，容不得自暴自弃。我们需要你们这一代发光发热的年轻人去领导政治、商业界，科技、艺术、媒体还有学术领域。

There is honor[荣誉；信用；头衔] in all of these pursuits[追求]. And there is opportunity to do work that is infused[灌输] with moral[道德] purpose. You don't have to choose between doing good and doing well. It's a false choice, today more than ever. Your challenge is to find work that pays the rent[付租金], puts food on the table, and lets you do what is right and good and just.

在这些领域，都有非常多优秀的人才。也同时有许多工作机会为道德层次着力。尤其在今日，你们不必在"做好事"和"做好工作"之间做选择，这是同件事情不需要选择。你们面临的挑战就是首先满足自己的温饱，建设自己的家庭，这将让你有能力去做对的事情，好的事情，正确的事情。

So find your North Star. Let it guide you in life, and work, and in your life's work. Now, I suspect some of you aren't buying this. I won't take it personally. It's no surprise that people are skeptical[怀疑的；怀疑论的，不可知论的], especially here in Washington where these days you’ve got plenty of reason to be. And a healthy amount of skepticism[怀疑论；怀疑的态度] is fine. Though too often in this town, it turns to cynicism[玩世不恭，愤世嫉俗；犬儒主义；冷嘲热讽]. To the idea that no matter who’s talking or what they’re saying, that their motives[动机；目的；运动] are questionable[可疑的；有问题的], their character[性格，品质；特性；角色] is suspect[可疑的；不可信的], and if you search hard enough[上下求索], you can prove that they are lying. Maybe that's just the world we live in. But graduates, this is your world to change.

就是说找到你们的北极星，让它指引你的工作、生活以及人生事业。同时我怀疑你们中的某些人不愿接受我的说法。这点我并不介意，毫无疑问人应该有怀疑精神，特别是在华盛顿，这里有太多让你产生怀疑的理由。适当的怀疑态度是好的，但是太多怀疑容易让人陷入犬儒主义。无论他们说了些什么，又或者议论了哪些事情，动机都非常不单纯，人格也有许多值得怀疑的地方，只要你仔细观察，便能拆穿他们的谎言。或许那正是我们现在生活的世界，但是对于你们来说，这恰好是你们要改变的世界。

As I said, I am a proud son of the South. It's my home, and I will always love it. But for the last 17 years I’ve built a life in Silicon Valley[硅谷]. It's a special place. The kind of place where there’s no problem that can't be solved. No matter how difficult or complex, that's part of its essential quality[本质属性]. A very sincere sort of optimism.

诚如我所说，我是骄傲的南方之子。那是我的家乡，我也一直深爱着。然而在过去的17年里，我在硅谷开始了一段精彩人生，那是个非常特别的地方，在那里没有解决不了的问题，无论它有多么困难与复杂。这就是硅谷的核心精神，一种非常真诚的乐观精神。

Back in the 90s, Apple ran an advertising campaign we called “Think Different.”[非同凡想] It was pretty simple. Every ad was a photograph of one of our heroes. People who had the audacity[大胆；厚颜无耻] to challenge and change the way we all live. People like Gandhi[甘地（印度政府、社会和宗教领袖）] and Jackie Robinson[杰基·罗宾森（球星）], Martha Graham[玛莎·葛兰姆] and Albert Einstein[阿尔伯特·爱因斯坦], Amelia Earhart[阿梅莉亚·埃尔哈特] and Miles Davis[迈尔斯·戴维斯]. These people still inspire us. They remind us to live by[以…为生] our deepest values and reach for our highest aspirations[愿望;志向]. They make us believe that anything is possible. A friend of mine at Apple likes to say the best way to solve a problem is to walk into a room full of Apple engineers and proclaim, “this is impossible.”

I can tell you, they will not accept that. And neither should you. So that's the one thing I’d like to bring to you all the way from Cupertino[库比蒂诺（苹果电脑的全球总公司所在地，位于美国旧金山）], California. The idea that great progress is possible, whatever line of work you choose. There will always be cynics[愤世嫉俗者；玩世不恭者；犬儒主义者] and critics on the sidelines[边线；端线][当旁观者，不直接参加] tearing people down[扯下；诋毁；拆卸；逐条驳斥], and just as harmful are those people with good intentions who make no contribution at all. In his letter from the Birmingham jail, Dr. King wrote that our society needed to repent[后悔；忏悔], not merely for the hateful[可憎的；可恨的；可恶的] words of the bad people, but for the appalling[可怕的；令人震惊的] silence of the good people.

The sidelines[边线；端线] are not where you want to live your life. The world needs you in the arena[舞台；竞技场]. There are problems that need to be solved. Injustices[不公正；不公平；非正义] that need to be ended. People that are still being persecuted[烦扰，困扰或骚扰某人;（尤指宗教或政治信仰的）迫害]. Diseases still in need of cure. No matter what you do next, the world needs your energy, your passion. Your impatience would progress. Don't shrink[收缩；畏缩] from risk. And tune out[不听; 不注意;关掉] those critics and cynics. History rarely yields to[屈服；让步] one person, but think, and never forget, what happens when it does. That can be you. That should be you. That must be you.

人生不能只是坐在台下，世界需要你们登上竞技场，这个世界还有很多问题需要解决，还有很多不公等待终结，人们依然有受到压迫、疾病依然需要治疗。不管未来你们做什么，这个世界都需要你们的激情、热血,你的焦虑终将褪去。永远不要回避人生中的风险。历史很少因个人而改变，但是，不要停止思考、忘记正在发生的事情，也许那一个就是你，也应该是你，必须是你！

Congratulations Class of 2015. I’d like to take one photo of you, because this is the best view in the world. And it's a great one.
