WeChat Cracks Down on Accounts Offering Incentives to Share

Caixin

Business owners on have long promoted themselves on WeChat by offering customers rewards for sharing their content on the platform’s built-in social network.
Now, that tactic may have to change.
On Monday, WeChat released a statement saying that programs and content accounts are prohibited from “luring” users to share their products on WeChat’s Moments – a mini social network and content-sharing platform within WeChat – by offering users rewards such as discounts and physical gifts.

lure

1) 此处作动词,表示“引诱”,英文解释为“To lure someone means to trick them into a particular place or to trick them into doing something that they should not do.”

They did not realize that they were being lured into a trap.

2) 该词作名词除了表示“诱饵”,还可以表示“诱惑力;魅力”,英文解释为“A lure is an attractive quality that something has, or something that you find attractive.”

The excitement of hunting big game in Africa has been a lure to Europeans for 200 years.

WeChat said the practice has “severely” affected the user experience within Moments.
It named Liuli Reading, an online reading platform under New York-listed language learning enterprise Liulishuo, as a prime culprit for encouraging users to share their learning status for 80 days to get a free physical book in return.

culprit

1) 此处表示“犯罪者;犯错者”,英文解释为“When you are talking about a crime or something wrong that has been done, you can refer to the person who did it as the culprit.”

All the men were being deported even though the real culprits in the fight have not been identified.

2) 表示“(造成问题或麻烦的)原因”,英文解释为“When you are talking about a problem or bad situation, you can refer to its cause as the culprit.”

About 10% of Japanese teenagers are overweight. Nutritionists say the main culprit is increasing reliance on Western fast food.

WeChat said enterprises that break the rules will be prohibited from sharing product links entirely, and that it will encourage users to report violations.
