Pop star laments quarrel with immigration officer

Pop singer Zeng Yike apologized on Weibo on Wednesday for her inappropriate words and deeds toward a Chinese immigration inspection officer.

"I cannot believe that I was so emotional at the time. I have to say sorry to everybody, and I also want to apologize to the officer face-to-face if I get a chance," she wrote in the post, adding that she would try her best to accept the consequences of her actions.

The 29-year-old said in a Weibo posted on Monday that she was selected by an immigration inspection officer upon returning to China at Terminal 3 of the Beijing International Capital Airport.

According to Zeng's post, she was ordered to take off her hat and was then taken to an office for a video recording and was rudely questioned by a male officer, though she had already passed the self-service inspection on a machine.

Furious, Zeng attached pictures of the officer, including his name tag, on which there was the officer's personal information. She also wrote in the post: "This unreasonable guy who abused his power and detained me for no reason should be severely punished! He does have power, but loses face for all the working staff at the airport."

“但这个蛮不讲理,私用职权,不问原因就随意拘留行人的下级职员。...你是有职权,但给所有机场工作人员丢脸。”

The Beijing immigration inspection station carried out an investigation immediately and posted the findings on Weibo on Wednesday morning, saying that the officer ordered Zeng twice to take off her hat but that the singer ignored both requests and said insulting words to the officer when the latter requested a double check of her identity.

Higher-level officers finally let Zeng go after criticizing her, as the incident did not warrant any severe consequences. However, for Zeng's posting of photos of the officer's personal information, which left an adverse effect on the officer, the inspection station would reserve the right to pursue legal action, the inspection station said in the post.

warrant

显得适当”,英文解释为“If something warrants a particular action, it makes the action seem necessary or appropriate for the circumstances.”

The allegations are serious enough to warrant an investigation.

Obviously what she did was wrong, but I don't think it warranted such a severe punishment.

adverse

表示“不利的;负面的;有害的”,英文解释为“having a negative or harmful effect on something”举个🌰:

They received a lot of adverse publicity/criticism about the changes.

The station also reminded the public that according to the Exit and Entry Administration Law of the People's Republic of China, Chinese citizens should cooperate with immigration inspection by taking off their hats, sunglasses or face masks when entering or exiting the country.

Many netizens expressed support for the officer, saying that Zeng's misuse of her influence as a pop star was improper. After the incident, she said she will not show up at the Strawberry Music Festival in Changsha, Hunan province, to be held June 22 to 23.

Zeng gained fame on the television show Super Girl in 2009. Her popular song, Leo, was widely circulated among Chinese public and remains controversial due to her voice.

Chinese Pop Star Apologizes Amid Flak for Airport Kerfuffle

SIXTH TONE

A Chinese pop idol has issued an apology after receiving fierce backlash this week for mistreating Beijing airport staff — though fallout from the incident has continued to escalate.

flak

He has taken a lot of flak for his views on drugs.

kerfuffle /kə'fʌfəl ;kɚˋfʌfḷ /

He lost his job in the fallout from the incident.

In a now-deleted social media post on Monday, singer Zeng Yike — also known as Yico Zeng or Yico Tseng — accused an officer at Beijing Capital Airport of wrongfully detaining her. However, in a response posted Wednesday morning, Beijing’s immigration inspection authority rebuked Zeng for refusing to cooperate with airport staff, using obscenities, and later revealing an officer’s name and other personal information in her Weibo post.

rebuke

表示“斥责,指责”,英文解释为“to speak to someone severely about something they have done wrong”举个🌰:

Members of the jury were sharply rebuked for speaking to the press.

He was shouting and screaming obscenities.

Zeng apologized by Wednesday afternoon for her “inappropriate” words and actions, but additional repercussions followed throughout the day. Shortly after the mea culpa, People’s Daily published an opinion piece criticizing the celebrity for interfering with law enforcement. And later, organizers of the Strawberry Music Festival in central China’s Changsha City announced that they had canceled Zeng’s upcoming set.

repercussion

表示“(尤指不好的)持续影响;反响;后果”,英文解释为“the effects of an action or event, especially bad effects that continue for some time”举个🌰:

The collapse of the company had repercussions for the whole industry.

mea culpa

表示“是我不好,我的过失;我应受谴责;我应负责任”,英文解释为“used to admit that something was your fault”。

Mea culpa is a Latin phrase that means "through my fault" and is an acknowledgement of having done wrong. Grammatically, meā culpā is in the ablative case, with an instrumental meaning.

The phrase comes from a prayer of confession of sinfulness, known as the Confiteor, used in the Roman Rite at the beginning of Mass or when receiving the sacrament of Penance. The expression is used also as an admission of having made a mistake that should have been avoided, and may be accompanied by beating the breast as in its use in a religious context.
