LearnAndRecord 2022-07-26

The worst passwords of 2019: Did yours make the list?

WeLiveSecurity

Year after year, analyses show that millions of people make, to put it mildly, questionable choices when it comes to the passwords they use to protect their accounts. And fresh statistics for the year that is drawing to a close confirm that bad habits do die hard and many people willingly put themselves in the firing line of account-takeover attacks.

die hard

表示“(习惯、观念等)难以消除;难以改变”,英文解释为“If you say that habits or attitudes die hard, you mean that they take a very long time to disappear or change, so that it may not be possible to get rid of them completely.”

Old habits die hard

(A diehard is someone who is very strongly opposed to change and new ideas, or who is a very strong supporter of a person or idea.)

the firing line

1)表示“火线;冲突最前线”,英文解释为“If you are in the firing line in a conflict, you are in a position where someone is aiming their gun at you.”

Any hostages in the firing line would have been sacrificed.

2)表示“批评;指责”,英文解释为“If you say that someone is in the firing line, you mean that they are being criticized, blamed, or attacked for something.”

Foreign banks are in the firing line too.

Drawing on an analysis of a total of 500 million passwords that were leaked in various data breaches in 2019, NordPass found that ‘12345’, ‘123456’ and ‘123456789’ reigned supreme in order of frequency. Between them, these numerical strings were used to ‘secure’ a total of 6.3 million accounts. It doesn’t get much more optimistic further down the list, however, as these three choices were followed by ‘test1’ and, the one and only, ‘password’.

draw on

表示“利用”,英文解释为“If you draw on or draw upon something such as your skill or experience, you make use of it in order to do something.”

He drew on his experience as a yachtsman to make a documentary programme.

breach

1)作名词,表示“违反”,英文解释为“A breach of an agreement, a law, or a promise is an act of breaking it.”

The congressman was accused of a breach of secrecy rules

2)作名词,表示“(关系中的)裂痕”,英文解释为“A breach in a relationship is a serious disagreement which often results in the relationship ending.”

Their actions threatened a serious breach in relations between the two countries.

3)作名词,表示“破坏;辜负”,英文解释为“of sth an action that breaks an agreement to behave in a particular way”,如:a  breach of confidence/trust  泄密;背信,a breach of security (= when sth that is normally protected is no longer secure) 破坏安全,此处打他breach 可以解释为数据泄漏。

reign

1)表示“主宰”,英文解释为“If you say, for example, that silence reigns in a place or confusion reigns in a situation, you mean that the place is silent or the situation is confused.”

Last night confusion reigned about how the debate, which continues today, would end.

2)表示“成为最佳;成为最重要的;占绝对优势”,英文解释为“to be the best or most important in a particular situation or area of skill”举个🌰:

In the field of classical music, he still reigns supreme.

Somewhat predictably, the chart is overall replete with many usual suspects among the most common passwords – think ‘asdf’, ‘qwerty’, ‘iloveyou’ and various other stalwart choices. Other supremely hackable passwords – including simple numerical strings, common names, and rows of keys – also abound. Much the same picture is painted annually by SplashData’s lists of the most-used passwords, such as last year, the year before that, and so on.

replete

1)表示“充满的;装满的”,英文解释为“To be replete with something means to be full of it.”

The harbour was replete with boats.

2)表示“吃饱喝足的;酒足饭饱的”,英文解释为“If you are replete, you are pleasantly full of food and drink. ”举个🌰:

Replete, guests can then retire to the modern conservatory for coffee.

stalwart

表示“忠诚的;忠实的”,英文解释为“loyal and able to be relied on, even in a difficult situation”,如:stalwart supporters 忠实的拥护者。

The entire list of the 200 most popular passwords is available in NordPass’ blog post, but here’s at least the top 25. Let that sink in.

sink in

表示“被充分理解;被领会”,英文解释为“When a statement or fact sinks in, you finally understand or realize it fully.”

The implication took a while to sink in.

Eerily familiar?
If you recognize any of the above as your own, then fixing your passwords is almost certainly one of the things that deserve a place on your laundry list of New Year’s resolutions. For starters, fixing here means not having the exact same idea as millions of other people when you’re signing up to a service and are asked to create your password.

resolution

1)表示“决议”,英文解释为“A resolution is a formal decision made at a meeting by means of a vote.”

He replied that the UN had passed two major resolutions calling for a complete withdrawal.

2)表示“决心,决定”,英文解释为“If you make a resolution, you decide to try very hard to do something.”

They made a resolution to lose all the weight gained during the Christmas holidays.

One way to go about this is opt for a passphrase, which, if done right, is generally a tougher nut to crack as well as easier to remember. The latter is especially useful if you don’t use password management software, which, somewhat unsurprisingly, has been shown to benefit both password strength and uniqueness. Yes, that passphrase should, of course, be unique for each of your online accounts, as recycling your passwords across various services is tantamount to asking for trouble.

opt for

表示“选择”,英文解释为“If you opt for something, or opt to do something, you choose it or decide to do it in preference to anything else.”

Depending on your circumstances you can opt for one method or the other.

a hard/tough nut (to crack)

表示“棘手的问题;不好对付的情形”,英文解释为“a difficult problem or situation to deal with”。

be tantamount to

表示“无异于的”,英文解释为“If you say that one thing is tantamount to another, more serious thing, you are emphasizing how bad, unacceptable, or unfortunate the first thing is by comparing it to the second thing.”

If he resigned it would be tantamount to admitting that he was guilty.

You may also want to watch out for password leaks. There are a number of services these days where you can check if your login credentials may have been caught up in a known breach. Some of them even offer you the option to sign up for alerts if your login information is compromised in a breach.

credentials

1)表示“(身份或资格的)证明文件;凭据”,英文解释为“Someone's credentials are a letter or certificate that proves their identity or qualifications.”

The new ambassador to Lebanon has presented his credentials to the president.

2)表示“(表明某人有资格做某事的)资历”,英文解释为“Someone's credentials are their previous achievements, training, and general background, which indicate that they are qualified to do something.”如:her credentials as a Bach specialist 她作为一名巴赫研究专家的资历。

In fact, as ours is an era where login data are compromised by the millions, why settle for one line of defense if you can have two? At the risk of repeating ourselves, two-factor authentication is a highly valuable way to add an additional layer of security to online accounts on top of your password.
