Comrades,

现在，我代表第十九届中央委员会向大会作报告。

On behalf of the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, I will now deliver a report to the 20th National Congress.

看到respect，经常有小伙伴会问，respect是不是写错了应该是aspect？这个说法在政府工作报告中必出现，其实没错，respect作名词，熟词僻义，也有“（事物的）方面，细节”的含义（a particular aspect or detail of sth），举个🌰：

This proposal differs from the last one in many important respects/one important respect.

本提案在很多重要的方面/在一个重要的方面与上一提案不同。

comrade /ˈkɒm.reɪd/ 表示“（尤指共产主义、社会主义组织或工会的）同志，同仁”，英文解释为“a member of the same political group, especially a communist or socialist group or a trade union”举个🌰：

Welcome to the conference, comrades.

同志们，欢迎你们参加本次大会。

中国共产党第二十次全国代表大会，是在全党全国各族人民迈上全面建设社会主义现代化国家新征程、向第二个百年奋斗目标进军的关键时刻召开的一次十分重要的大会。

The 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China is a meeting of great importance. It takes place at a critical time as the entire Party and the Chinese people of all ethnic groupsembark on a new journey to build China into a modern socialist country in all respects and advance toward the Second Centenary Goal.

ethnic /ˈeθ.nɪk/ 表示“民族的；种族的”，英文解释为“relating to a particular race of people”举个🌰：

A question on ethnic origin was included in the census.

人口普查项目包括一个有关种族出身的问题。

表示“开始，着手做（新的或重要的事情）”，英文解释为“to start something new or important”如：embark on a new journey 开启新征程，举个🌰：

We're embarking upon a new project later this year.

今年晚些时候我们会启动一个新项目。

centenary /sɛnˈtiːnərɪ/ 表示“一百周年（纪念）”，英文解释为“the day or year exactly 100 years after a particular event”如：a concert to mark the centenary of the composer's birth 纪念这位作曲家百年华诞的音乐会。

大会的主题是：高举中国特色社会主义伟大旗帜，全面贯彻新时代中国特色社会主义思想，弘扬伟大建党精神，自信自强、守正创新，踔厉奋发、勇毅前行，为全面建设社会主义现代化国家、全面推进中华民族伟大复兴而团结奋斗。

The theme of the congress is holding high the great banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, fully implementing the Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, carrying forward the great founding spirit of the Party, staying confident and building strength, upholding fundamental principles and breaking new ground, forging ahead with enterprise and fortitude, and striving in unity to build a modern socialist country in all respects and advance the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation on all fronts.

表示“支持，维护，赞成（尤指法律上的决议）”，英文解释为“to defend or keep a principle or law, or to say that a decision that has already been made, especially a legal one, is correct”如：to uphold a conviction/an appeal/a complaint 维持原判；受理上诉/申诉，举个🌰：

As a police officer you are expected to uphold the law whether you agree with it or not.

作为警察，不管你赞成与否都应该维护法律。

break fresh/new ground 表示“开辟新天地，创新；作出新发现”，英文解释为“to do or discover something new”举个🌰：

This recovery technique breaks new ground.

这种康复技术是一项创新。

forge /fɔːdʒ/ 表示“突然进展神速；迅猛发展”，英文解释为“to suddenly make a lot of progress with something”举个🌰：

The organizers are forging ahead with a programme of public events.

组织者搞的一个公共活动计划进展神速。

enterprise /ˈen.tə.praɪz/ 熟词僻义，表示“事业心；进取心；创业精神；冒险精神”，英文解释为“eagerness to do something new and clever, despite any risks”举个🌰：

They've shown a lot of enterprise in setting up this project.

启动这个项目显示出他们豪迈的进取精神。

fortitude /ˈfɔː.tɪ.tʃuːd/ 表示“勇气，坚韧，刚毅”，英文解释为“courage over a long period”举个🌰：

I thought she showed remarkable fortitude during that period.

我认为她在那段时期表现出了惊人的勇气。

表示“（尤指长期或不畏艰难地）努力，奋斗，力争”，英文解释为“to try very hard to do something or to make something happen, especially for a long time or against difficulties”举个🌰：

In her writing she strove for a balance between innovation and familiar prose forms.

她在写作中力图在创新和传统散文形式之间求得平衡。

rejuvenation  /rɪˌdʒuːvəˈneɪʃn/ 表示“更新；复苏；复壮；回春作用”，英文解释为“the action or process of giving new energy or vigor to something.”

中国共产党已走过百年奋斗历程。我们党立志于中华民族千秋伟业，致力于人类和平与发展崇高事业，责任无比重大，使命无上光荣。

Since its founding a century ago, the Communist Party of China has taken a remarkable journey. Our Party has dedicated itself to achieving lasting greatness for the Chinese nation and committed itself to the noble cause of peace and development for humanity. Our responsibility is unmatched in importance, and our mission is glorious beyond compare.

1）表示“做（违法或错误的事）；犯（罪、错）”，英文解释为“to do something illegal or something that is considered wrong”，举个🌰：

He was sent to prison for a crime that he didn't commit.

他蒙冤入狱。

2）表示“承诺，保证；（使）忠于；（使）致力于；投入（时间或金钱）”，英文解释为“to promise or give your loyalty, time, or money to a particular principle, person, or plan of action”举个🌰：

Like so many men, he has problems committing himself to a relationship.

像许多男人一样，他也存在用情不专的问题。

📍commit本身也有“订婚，决定与（某人）保持长期感情”的含义，英文解释为：be in a long-term emotional relationship with (someone).

表示“（为某些人所强烈支持的）原则，事业，目标”，英文解释为“a socially valuable principle that is strongly supported by some people”举个🌰：

They are fighting for a cause - the liberation of their people. 他们正为解放人民这一事业而战斗。

💯 unmatched表示“无可匹敌的，无双的，无与伦比的”，英文解释为“better than all others”举个🌰：

He had a talent unmatched by any other politician of this century.

他的才华是本世纪其他政坛人物所望尘莫及的。

💯 unrivalled含义类似，表示“无与伦比的；无双的”，英文解释为“If you describe something as unrivalled, you are emphasizing that it is better than anything else of the same kind.”

还有如：

💯 unsurpassed表示“无比的；卓绝的；出类拔萃的”，英文解释为“If you describe something as unsurpassed, you are emphasizing that it is better or greater than anything else of its kind.”

全党同志务必不忘初心、牢记使命，务必谦虚谨慎、艰苦奋斗，务必敢于斗争、善于斗争，坚定历史自信，增强历史主动，谱写新时代中国特色社会主义更加绚丽的华章。

It is imperative that all of us in the Party never forget our original aspiration and founding mission, that we always stay modest, prudent, and hard-working, and that we have the courage and ability to carry on our fight. We must remain confident in our history, exhibit greater historical initiative, and write an even more magnificent chapter for socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era.

1）作形容词，表示“至关重要的；紧急的；迫切的”，英文解释为“If it is imperative that something be done, that thing is extremely important and must be done.”，举个🌰：

It was imperative that he act as naturally as possible.

至关重要的是他要尽可能地自然行事。

2）作名词，表示“重要紧急的事；必要的事；需要”，英文解释为“a thing that is very important and needs immediate attention or action”。

prudent /ˈpruː.dənt/ 表示“谨慎的，慎重的；精明的”，英文解释为“careful and avoiding risks”举个🌰：

It's always prudent to read a contract carefully before signing it.

签合同前先好好看一下，这样做永远都是明智的。

表示“展出，展览；展示；表现”，英文解释为“to show something publicly”举个🌰：

He exhibited great self-control considering her rudeness.

她那么无礼，他表现出如此的克制力已很不错了。

📍表明，表示，展示出，显示，类似的有：show、find、demonstrate、exhibit，suggest。

magnificent /mæɡˈnɪf.ɪ.sənt/ 表示“极好的；壮丽的；令人羡慕的”，英文解释为“very good, beautiful, or deserving to be admired”如：a magnificent view 壮丽的景色。

一、过去五年的工作和新时代十年的伟大变革

十九大以来的五年，是极不寻常、极不平凡的五年。

The five years since the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) have been truly momentous and extraordinary.

表示“重大的，重要的”，英文解释为“very important because of effects on future events”如：the momentous news 重大消息。

党中央统筹中华民族伟大复兴战略全局和世界百年未有之大变局，就党和国家事业发展作出重大战略部署，

The Party Central Committee has pursued a strategy of national rejuvenation amid global changes of a magnitude not seen in a century, with major strategic plans made for advancing the cause of the Party and the country.

magnitude /ˈmæɡ.nɪ.tʃuːd/ 1）表示“（尺寸、规模、重要性等）大的程度；巨大；重大，重要性”，英文解释为“the large size or importance of something”举个🌰：

They don't seem to grasp the magnitude of the problem.

他们似乎未领会问题的重要性。

2）表示“震级”（the size of an earthquake）。

团结带领全党全军全国各族人民有效应对严峻复杂的国际形势和接踵而至的巨大风险挑战，以奋发有为的精神把新时代中国特色社会主义不断推向前进。

The Central Committee has brought together the entire Party, the military, and the Chinese people and led them in effectively responding to grave, intricate international developments and a series of immense risks and challenges. With great effort and determination, we have steadily advanced socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era.

表示“严重的，重大的，严峻的”，英文解释为“seriously bad”，如：a grave situation 严峻的形势。

📍2017年政府工作报告「Part1」中就有这么一句：过去一年，我国发展面临国内外诸多矛盾叠加、风险隐患交汇的严峻挑战。In the past year, China's development has faced grave challenges posed by a great many problems and interwoven risks and dangers both at home and abroad.

intricate /ˈɪn.trɪ.kət/ 表示“错综复杂的；复杂精细的；难理解的；难解决的”，英文解释为“having a lot of small parts or details that are arranged in a complicated way and are therefore sometimes difficult to understand, solve, or produce”举个🌰：

The watch mechanism is extremely intricate and very difficult to repair.

手表的机械结构非常复杂精细，很难修理。

五年来，

Over the past five years, 

我们坚持加强党的全面领导和党中央集中统一领导，

-- We have continued to strengthen the overall leadership of the Party and the centralized, unified leadership of the Central Committee.

全力推进全面建成小康社会进程，

-- We have devoted great energy to finishing building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.

完整、准确、全面贯彻新发展理念，着力推动高质量发展，主动构建新发展格局，

-- We have fully and faithfully applied the new development philosophy on all fronts, focused on promoting high-quality development, and worked to create a new pattern of development.

蹄疾步稳推进改革，扎实推进全过程人民民主，全面推进依法治国，

-- We have pursued reform at a swift and steady pace, made solid progress in developing whole-process people's democracy, and advanced law-based governance across all fields of endeavor.

积极发展社会主义先进文化，

-- We have actively developed advanced socialist culture.

突出保障和改善民生，集中力量实施脱贫攻坚战，

-- We have ensured and improved public wellbeing as a matter of priority and pooled resources to wage a critical battle against poverty.

熟词僻义，作动词，表示“（为不同人士或团体）集合（资金／资源）”，英文解释为“to collect something such as money in order for it to be used by several different people or groups”举个🌰：

The kids pooled their money to buy their parents a wedding anniversary gift.

孩子们把钱凑在一起为父母买了结婚周年礼物。

作名词，表示“共享人员；共享资金；共享资源”，英文解释为“a number of people or a quantity of a particular thing, such as money, collected together for shared use by several people or organizations”举个🌰：

He crashed a Ford that he'd borrowed from the car pool at work.

他把从公司车队借的一辆福特汽车撞坏了。

大力推进生态文明建设，

-- We have made a big push to enhance ecological conservation.

坚决维护国家安全，防范化解重大风险，保持社会大局稳定，

-- We have worked with firm resolve to safeguard national security, fended off and defused major risks, and ensured social stability.

表示“避开，回避”，英文解释为“to avoid dealing with something that is unpleasant or difficult”举个🌰：

Somehow she managed to fend off the awkward questions.

不管怎么着，她还是设法避开了那些尴尬的问题。

defuse /ˌdiːˈfjuːz/ 表示“缓和；平息”，英文解释为“to make a difficult or dangerous situation calmer by reducing or removing its cause”举个🌰：

The two groups will meet next week to try to defuse the crisis/situation/tension.

双方将于下周会面以求缓和危机/局面/紧张局势。

大力度推进国防和军队现代化建设，

-- We have devoted great energy to modernizing our national defense and the armed forces.

全方位开展中国特色大国外交，

-- We have conducted major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics on all fronts.

全面推进党的建设新的伟大工程。

-- and we have made sweeping efforts to advance the great new project of Party building.

作形容词，1）表示“影响广泛的；大范围的；根本性的；意义深远的”，英文解释为“having an important effect on a large part of sth”如：sweeping changes 彻底变化，举个🌰：

They were given sweeping powers to search homes.

他们授予入户搜查的极大权力。

🎬电影《沉默》（Silence）中的台词提到：He wrote those words during the most sweeping persecution of all. 他写下这些话时 正经历着最为残酷的迫害。

2）sweeping statement/generalization 表示“泛泛之谈；一概而论的说法；过于笼统的概括”，英文解释为“something that you say or write that is too general and that has not been carefully thought about”举个🌰：

Sweeping generalizations about this complex and difficult situation are not helpful.

对这种复杂困难的情形作泛泛之谈是没有用的。

📍sweep作动词，可以表示“风行，风靡，迅速蔓延，迅速传播；席卷；横扫”，英文解释为“to quickly spread through and influence an area”举个🌰：

A flu epidemic is sweeping through Moscow.

一场流感正在莫斯科迅速传播。

📺电视剧《王冠》（The Crown）中的台词提到：Independence is sweeping across the continent. ~席卷这片大陆。

📺动画片《辛普森一家》（The Simpsons）中的台词提到：A plague is sweeping through Springfield. 一场瘟疫正席卷斯普林菲尔德。
