十八大召开至今巳经十年了。

Ten years have passed since the Party's 18th National Congress.

十年来，我们经历了对党和人民事业具有重大现实意义和深远历史意义的三件大事：一是迎来中国共产党成立一百周年，二是中国特色社会主义进入新时代，三是完成脱贫攻坚、全面建成小康社会的历史任务，实现第一个百年奋斗目标。

The past decade marked three major events of great immediate importance and profound historical significance for the cause of the Party and the people: We embraced the centenary of the Communist Party of China; we ushered in a new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics; and we eradicated absolute poverty and finished building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, thus completing the First Centenary Goal.

表示“开创（尤指重大的变化或新事物）；开始；开启”，英文解释为“to be at the start of a new period, especially when important changes or new things happen, or to cause important changes to start happening”举个🌰：

His inventions helped usher in the era of skyscrapers.

eradicate /ɪˈræd.ɪ.keɪt/ 表示“根除；消灭；杜绝”，英文解释为“to get rid of something completely or destroy something bad”举个🌰：

These were historic feats—feats accomplished by the Communist Party of China and the Chinese people striving in unity, feats that will be forever recorded in the Chinese nation's history, and feats that will profoundly influence the world.

feat表示“功绩；技艺；武艺；功绩；英勇事迹”，英文解释为“If you refer to an action, or the result of an action, as a feat, you admire it because it is an impressive and difficult achievement.”如：to perform/attempt/achieve astonishing feats 表演惊人的技艺；争取/取得惊人的功绩，举个🌰：

The tunnel is a brilliant feat of engineering.

这条隧道是工程方面的光辉业绩。

📍be no easy feat 不容易，非易事。类似的还有be no small feat/ be no mean feat可以理解为“是了不起的成就，绝非易事”，英文解释为：to be a great achievement，举个🌰：

🎬电影《惊天魔盗团2》（Now You See Me 2）中的台词提到：by performing what he calls an impossible feat. 在这里上演他所谓不可能的奇迹。

Great achievements had been secured in reform, opening up, and socialist modernization, and notable advances had been made in the great new project of Party building.

表示“基础，根基”，英文解释为“support, strength, or the basic structure of something”举个🌰：

After a while, we found ourselves questioning the spiritual and philosophical underpinning of the American way of life.

Inside the Party, there were many issues with respect to upholding the Party's leadership, including a lack of clear understanding and effective action as well as a slide toward weak, hollow, and watered-down Party leadership in practice.

hollow /ˈhɒl.əʊ/ 表示“（局面、情感或言语）无价值的，空洞的，虚伪的”，英文解释为“(of situations, feelings, or words) without value, or not true or sincere”举个🌰：

It was something of a hollow victory - she won the case but lost all her savings in legal fees.

Some Party members and officials were wavering in their political conviction.

waver /ˈweɪ.vər/ 1）表示“（尤指暂时地）动摇”，英文解释为“to lose strength, determination, or purpose, especially temporarily”举个🌰：

I'm afraid my concentration began to waver as lunch approached.

恐怕我的注意力在临近午饭时要开始下降了。

2）表示“（在两个选择之间）踌躇，犹豫不决”，英文解释为“If you waver between two possibilities, you cannot decide which of them to choose or you keep choosing one way and then the other.”举个🌰：

Despite repeated warnings, pointless formalities, bureaucratism, hedonism, and extravagance persisted in some localities and departments.

hedonism /ˈhed.ən.ɪ.zəm/ 表示“享乐主义”，英文解释为“living and behaving in ways that mean you get as much pleasure out of life as possible, according to the belief that the most important thing in life is to enjoy yourself”

extravagance /ɪkˈstræv.ə.ɡəns/ 表示“奢侈，铺张”，英文解释为“behaviour in which you spend more money than you need to”举个🌰：

I think she was shocked by my extravagance.

我想，我太铺张了，她一定感到很震惊。

特权思想和特权现象较为严重，一些贪腐问题触目惊心；

Privilege-seeking mindsets and practices posed a serious problem, and some deeply shocking cases of corruption had been uncovered.

China's economy was beset by acute structural and institutional problems.

beset /bɪˈset/ 表示“困扰的；充满…困难的”，英文解释为“having a lot of trouble with something, or having to deal with a lot of something that causes problems”举个🌰：

With the amount of traffic nowadays, even a trip across town is beset by/with dangers.

目前交通如此拥挤，即使穿城而行也充满了危险。

1）表示“严峻的”，英文解释为“You can use acute to indicate that an undesirable situation or feeling is very severe or intense.”举个🌰：

There is an acute shortage of water.

水严重短缺。

2）表示“（疾病）急性的”，英文解释为“an acute illness is one that has quickly become severe and dangerous”如：acute appendicitis 急性阑尾炎。

发展不平衡、不协调、不可持续，传统发展模式难以为继，

Development was imbalanced, uncoordinated, and unsustainable, and the traditional development model could no longer keep us moving forward.

一些深层次体制机制问题和利益固化藩篱日益显现；

Some deep-seated problems in institutions and barriers built by vested interests were becoming more and more apparent.

As both a teacher and parent, she had a vested interest in seeing the school remain open.

一些人对中国特色社会主义政治制度自信不足，有法不依、执法不严等问题严重存在；

Some people lacked confidence in the socialist political system with Chinese characteristics, and, all too often, we saw laws being ignored or not being strictly enforced.

拜金主义、享乐主义、极端个人主义和历史虚无主义等错误思潮不时出现，网络舆论乱象丛生，严重影响人们思想和社会舆论环境；

Misguided patterns of thinking such as money worship, hedonism, egocentricity, and historical nihilism were common, and online discoursewas rife with disorder. All this had a grave impact on people's thinking and the public opinion environment.

worship /ˈwɜːʃɪp/ 可作名词也可以作动词，1）表示“（对上帝或神的）崇拜，敬仰，礼拜”，英文解释为“the practice of showing respect for God or a god, by saying prayers, singing with others, etc.; a ceremony for this”如：ancestor worship 对祖先的崇拜，举个🌰：

On the island the people worshipped different gods.

在这个岛上，人们信仰不同的神。

2）表示“（常指盲目地）宠爱，崇拜，崇尚”，英文解释为“to love, respect, and admire someone or something very much, often without noticing the bad qualities of that person or thing”举个🌰：

Her parents worship her.

egocentricity /ˌiː.ɡəʊ.senˈtrɪs.ə.ti/ 表示“自我中心；自私自利”，英文解释为“the condition of thinking only about yourself and what is good for you”

nihilism /ˈnaɪ.ə.lɪ.zəm/ 表示“虚无主义”，英文解释为“a belief that all political and religious organizations are bad, or a system of thought that says that there are no principles or beliefs that have any meaning or can be true”

1）表示“论文；演讲”，英文解释为“a long and serious treatment or discussion of a subject in speech or writing”，如：a discourse on issues of gender equality 关于性别平等的论文。

2）表示“语篇；话语；对话；交流”，英文解释为“the use of language in speech and writing in order to produce meaning; language that is studied, usually in order to see how the different parts of a text are connected”。

民生保障存在不少薄弱环节，资源环境约束趋紧、环境污染等问题突出；

Our work to ensure the people's wellbeing was fraught with weak links. Tightening resource and environmental constraints and environmental pollution were pronounced.

well developed /ˌwel dɪˈvel.əpt/ 表示“发展良好的；发育良好的；健全的”，英文解释为“having grown or increased in a positive way”举个🌰：

These areas are less well developed and so less attractive as investment prospects.

这些地区欠发达，在投资前景方面远没有那么有吸引力。

Back then, many people, both in and outside of our Party, were worried about the future of the Party and the country.

In the face of these acute problems and challenges, which undermined the Party’s long-term governance, the security and stability of the country, and the wellbeing of the people, the Party Central Committee fully assessed the situation, made resolute decisions, and took firm steps. Under its leadership, the entire Party, the military, and the Chinese people were brought together. We rolled up our sleeves and got down to work, forging ahead with resolve to carry out a great struggle with many new features of our times.

表示“（常指逐渐地）削弱信心、权威等，损害”，英文解释为“to make someone less confident, less powerful, or less likely to succeed, or to make something weaker, often gradually”举个🌰：

Criticism just undermines their confidence.

批评只是削弱了他们的信心。
