月饼节惊奇发现：新月和可颂面包居然是同一个词！？
月圆中秋
但愿人长久，千里共婵娟
“月”既表示月亮，也表示月份，这是因为人类最早的历法就是通过观察月亮得来的，月亮阴晴圆缺的一个轮回，正是一个阴历的月，这一个阴历月在英语中称为 lunar month。lunar 表示“月亮的”，month 表示“月份”。
从拼写上来看，moon 和 month 很相像，但 moon 和 lunar 却相差很远。原因也很简单，从词源来说 moon 和 month 是一样的，而 moon 和 lunar 则不同。moon 在法语中的对应词是 lune，是不是看上去和 lunar 更相像？
我们在表达农历的时候常常就用 lunar 这个词，农历是 lunar calendar，农历新年是 Lunar New Year，正月是 Lunar January，等等（备注：其实中国的农历并不是纯粹的阴历，而是阴阳历 lunisolar calendar，月份设置按阴历 lunar calendar，指导农业的二十四节气则是按阳历 solar calendar。但习惯上常把农历等同于阴历）。
古英语中，一周的第一天被视作是月神之日，即 day of the moon，因此星期一是 Monday。出于同样的理由，法语的星期一叫做 lundi，日语中则叫做月曜日。

月的盈缺表达
苏轼词中说“月有阴晴圆缺”，诗人艾米莉·狄金森（Emily Dickinson）则在诗中有类似描写：
The Moon was but a Chin of Gold
A Night or two ago ——
And now she turns Her perfect Face
Upon the World below ——
月亮只不过是个金子的下巴
在一两个夜晚之前——
现在她把她圆团团的脸
转向下面的人寰——

月亮从下巴似的新月变为圆脸似的满月，也就是月有阴晴圆缺啊。
月亮或盈或缺时的英语表达也相当丰富：
新月
young moon、new moon、crescent moon
月牙钩
horn
半月，上弦月，下弦月
half-moon、quarter moon
上弦月
first quarter moon
下弦月
third quarter、last quarter moon、old moon
满月
full moon
月亮的盈和缺分别是 wax 和 wane，于是 wax and wane 这个短语就用来表示盛衰交替：
This celebrity’s popularity has waxed and waned over the past year.
（去年，这位名人的声望时升时降。）
特别要说一下，新月 crescent 这个词，它在法语中的对应词是 croissant，除了指新月，它还可以一种食物，也就是在面包店里经常会看到的“可颂”啦。

Moon的其他用法
作为月球的 moon 是一颗卫星 satellite，是一颗天体 celestial/heavenly body。但在天文学之外作为月亮的 moon 则附加了人们对它抱持的很多奇异的想象或情感。
over the moon
非常高兴；乐翻了天；欣喜若狂
— How does it feel to have won the championships?
— I’m over the moon!
— 获得冠军的感觉如何？
— 我太开心了！
to promise (sb) the moon
开空头支票；作不可能兑现的承诺
He promised her the moon, but after ten years of marriage they hardly had enough to live on.
他向她作了许多空头承诺，可是结婚十年了，他们几乎入不敷出。
once in a blue moon
千载难逢；破天荒；极为难得
This is a once in a blue moon deal and only offered for a limited period!
这笔限时交易千载难逢！
to ask for/cry for/want the moon
想要得不到的东西；想做办不到的事情
I don’t ask for the moon; I just want him to listen to me for once.
我的要求并不过分，只想他能认真地听一次我的话。
从上面的短语可以看出，moon 暗含了几分白日梦 daydream 的意味，所以 moon 做动词时表示“沉溺于遐想”。
moon over sb
痴痴地思念；对……魂牵梦萦
He spends most of his time mooning over Helen.
他整天痴想着海伦。
由于那圆圆的形状，moon 还可以比喻“屁股”，进而表示“在公共场所露臀来恶作剧或侮辱”。露臀的人就是 mooner。
The ice hockey team has been fined after a picture of a team ‘moon’ appeared in the club magazine.
冰球队在俱乐部杂志上刊登了队员露臀照，因而被罚了款。
Where are you out there when the guy mooned us?
这家伙拿屁股侮辱我们的时候，你在哪？
当然 moon 做动词还有其它意思，比如“闲逛，虚度”。闲逛的人也是mooner。
moon about/around
（无精打采地）闲逛；（郁闷地）消磨时光
He mooned around the street, hoping to see Anna.
他在街上四处游荡，希望能见到安娜。
除了单独使用，moon 还可以和许多名词连用，moon landing 登月；moonwalk 月球行走，太空步；moon-face 圆脸; moonlight, moonbeam 月光；等等。
当然啦，眼下最最需要了解的就是 moon cake 月饼和 Moon Festival 中秋节啦！
