Small intervention for big ambition

这可能是最小的同时也是最大的音乐厅。

在项目之初,客户希望能够为他设计一个小型音乐教室。但与客户一起探讨后,我们决定通过设计展现一个更具有野心的想法而不仅仅是一个内向的教室。我们想要让这个空间成为一个辐射向城市的音乐厅。自此,城市音乐厅诞生了。

It is probably the smallest and biggest concert hall of all. 

The request from the client is to design asmall piano classroom for him. Instead of creating this introvert classroom, wedecided to develop a more ambitious gesture; we want to make it a radiant spacetowards the whole city. Thus the smallest and the biggest concert hall appears.


最小的,因为它可以是一个人为自己演奏的空间;最大的,因为这个城市就是它的观众席。

Be the smallest, as it is a space for oneto play for oneself; be the biggest, as the city is the space's audience.


概念水彩

我们想象这个空间就是一个插入场地的音乐厅。空间的形态抽象自三角钢琴的构造,钢琴的弦变成了舞台,金属板变成了天花,琴盖变成了观众席,而框架变成了后勤空间。这整个空间,就是一个面向城市的发声器。

We imagine the space like a concert hallinsert into the site. The morphology of the space is an abstract of a triangle piano. The strings become the stage, the metal plate and soundboard become theceiling; the lid becomes the audience; the frame becomes the back of the house.The whole space then becomes a generator facing the entire city. 


音乐厅面向城市成为一个安静的舞台。

The concert hall is a quite stage facingthe city.

门头是一尘不染的白色立面,没有logo标明这空间的名字或属性。只有简单的一行文字贴在玻璃上说明这是一个城市音乐厅。项目落成后,这里成了区域内有名的“景点”,每周这里都会举办一个小型的音乐会,观众可以是任何人,没有门票也不收取任何费用,大家聚集在门前自由的落座或者站着欣赏音乐。但演奏的曲目可不由观众决定,只有空间主人才能决定演出的曲目和时长。

The storefront is a spotless white façadewith no logo or text indicating the name of the space. It is merely a stage towatch. It becomes a famous spot in the whole area, every week, there will be asmall concert host here, the audience, everyone, no ticket or fee required toenjoy the music. Only one cannot choose what they want to hear, what will beperformed will be solely decided by the space owner.

Acoustic analysis and BIM model

音乐厅内部空间是一个三部曲的序列空间。我们通过声学模拟和BIM模型分析确定了三部分的空间形状以及材质。

The inner space is a trilogy space series. We comfirmed ths space shape and material by doing acoustic analysis and BIM model.

The first part is the “string” of this concert hall. The place is a speaker shape wood box insert into the space.

第二个部分是观众席,看向舞台。
The 2nd part is the audience seats looking at the stage.

最后一部分是后勤空间,包括了一个储藏间和一个卫生间。这两个空间像是两根巨大的柱子坐落在空间中。

The final part is the back of the house,one storage and one toilet. These two space are like two massive pillars seatsin the room.

音乐厅的灯光设计包含了多种不同的模式供不同方式的使用。

The light design for the concert hallincludes several modes for a different purpose.

处于表演模式时,背后两根柱子之间的光仿佛天光一样洗刷下来,同时钢琴和演奏者也分别被一个射灯打亮。

In performance mode, the light between thetwo pillars, flush down like a skylight, while two spotlights light up thepiano and player.

光效在这一模式下变得异常戏剧化。这一刻舞台真的变成了舞台,发生的每个动作包括钢琴本身都是舞台的一部分。

The light effect is theatrical in thismode. The stage is a stage at this moment.

当关掉灯光时,这空间变成了一个私人的音乐厅,自然光线落在材料上强调了不同部分的形状和质感。

Without light, space becomes a privateconcert hall; lights hits material emphasizes different parts and shapes insidethe room.

定制的家具可以相互叠放在一起节省储藏空间,但叠在一起后居然有了意外的雕塑感。

The furniture could be stacked together forstorage, but also quite like a sculpture when stacked.

在地图上,如果你知道城市音乐厅的位置,他对你来说,也只是一个小标记,但他却辐射向整个城市。
This concert hall is a tiny point mark onthe map if you know the location, but space radiates toward the whole city.

音乐在很多方面与空间相似,都具有深度和长度。当声音从钢琴中传出,充满了整个房间,演奏者就在三维中体验着这音乐,身处音乐之中。

Music are in many ways, similar to space;it has depth and length. When the sound comes out from the piano, it fills upthe whole room, then you experience the music in 3-dimension, you see it, youfeel it, and you are in it.

SAY architects founded on 2017, is an award-winning innovative design office focusing on architecture, interior and urban planning. The studio is located in Hangzhou, lead by Yan Zhang and Jianan Shan. Both Yan and Jianan had practiced in multiple internationally-honored design studio for years before founding the studio. SAY architects has a extensive experience in Arts, Hospitality, commercial, and landscape works in various scale, other projects includes retail, office, public utilities and master planning.
With each project, SAY architects try to discover a unique character based on client, program, site and context. We want to create a narrative and personal space feeling for each project. With multiple design media including sketches, physical models, watercolor and mock ups, we push each project from concept to construction.
