Chika Udekwe [Nigeria]

The Evening at Omambala River (and other two poems)

soulfully dehydrated lonesome me

had to lament audibly in silence.

I loosely let myself take a bold walk beneath the deep water

to meet her in her glory;

To tell her what the sorry-state my earth has become.

All the Flowers Know is Their Beauty

The flowers are not obsessed

about those beggars in my street;

because they do not walk,

they do not see.

They blossom

until the night comes.

Some of them

in the cities are on sale.

Some of them

in your villages are also in some bushes.

Some of them

are at the roadsides.

These flowers are everywhere

but never bothered.

All the flowers know is their beauty

and that their beauty is theirs.

We, humans,

buy or pick them,

nurture them,

admire them,

and gift them out. We care for them differently

but with all tenderly manner.

We touch and cherish them for being beautiful.

That is why some are placed inside the house,

some seen outside the house,

and in the streets like those beggars in my street.

Leave Here

'This is our rice farm

leave this field

stop grazing

stop eating our rice.

I said, go away you cattleman

take your cattle away!'

Then I threw a stone at one large-mouthed cow

just to chase them away as they seemed defiant after shouting and shouting.

The cattleman came with his double-edged sword

subdued me

put his sword forward to butcher me.

My hand is now stitched, right?

The pains ameliorated

but, you can see the lines of grief

on my face, mother.

A stone at one cow

landed me here in this doctor's house

almost amputated, mother.

“Never throw stones at their cows again, son.

Allow them to eat to their fill;

Perhaps to them crops are grasses.”

Mother said and sobbed conveniently.

我街上的乞丐;
