How Expats Get PRC Social Insurance Cards?


Social Insurance Law of the People's Republic of China regulates that expats shall pay social insurance fees, either by their employers or themselves. 


As the first step of involving the social insurance system, many expats inquire:

 

How to Apply for Social Insurance Cards?



Take Guangzhou as an example.


Location


Currently, expats can only apply for the card on the spots, in 11 banks.


  • Industrial and Commercial Bank of China

  • Agricultural Bank of China

  • Bank of China

  • China Construction Bank

  • Bank of Communication

  • Postal Savings Bank of China

  • China Everbright Bank

  • China Merchants Bank

  • China Guangfa Bank

  • Bank of Guangzhou

  • Guangzhou Rural Commercial Bank



Material


1. Valid identification

  • Foreign passport;

  • Foreigner’s Work Permit Card or Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card;

  • Except for the situation of owning a Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card, Foreigner’s Work Permit Card is a must.

2. Photo

  • One recent 25x35mm photo with white background.


*Each application spot might require specific application materials



Application


  • Expats over 16 years old

    Personally take valid identification to the spot, or entrust a representative over 18 years old with the applicant's and the representative’s valid identification to apply.


  • Expats below 16 years old

    The legal guardian takes the applicant’s and the representative’s valid identification, and the materials proving the legal guardianship relationship to apply.
