Scholarships and Bursaries

WCIH WellingtonCollegeHZ 2020-10-11

From the 2019-2020 academic year, starting in August 2019, Wellington College International Hangzhou is pleased to offer a range of scholarships and bursaries.

Scholarships

We recognise and reward excellence by offering a limited number of scholarships in the categories of music, drama, dance and sports. Scholars play a significant role in the life of the college and, whatever their discipline, must show a high degree of ability in their chosen field and be able to demonstrate leadership in the encouragement of non-scholarship holding pupils. In general terms, the scholarship awards provide benefits such as free tuition or coaching for pupils, rather than fee reductions.

Sports Award Scholarships

Sports awards may be offered to candidates with outstanding achievement and promise in at least one sport which is played at Wellington: primarily, therefore, in football, swimming, basketball, rugby, cricket, netball or athletics. Consideration may be given to other sports where exceptional talent is evident. Candidates should have the potential for county, regional and/or national representation when compared with UK standards. Due to the breadth of sporting activities on offer at Wellington, the award will also be guided by the demand for talent in each sport and the ability of each applicant.

Music Scholarships

The standard of the candidate’s main instrument should be around the level of ABRSM Grade 6 and ideally, candidates should have been studying their instrument for at least five years. However, potential is regarded as being equally as important. Successful candidates will be those who show a genuine interest in their development as a musician and those who are willing to make a significant contribution to the musical life of the college.

Drama, Dance and Musical Theatre Scholarships

Candidates applying for either a drama, dance or musical theatre award must attend a formal audition at Wellington during which they will be expected to show creativity, verve, commitment to the subject and excellent vocal and physical skills. Candidates for dance awards are expected to have studied dance from an early age and to have reached the equivalent of intermediate or advanced level in either ballet or modern dance (or both) using the R.A.D. and I.S.T.D. syllabuses (or equivalent).

Bursaries

The college offers a limited number of bursaries. Bursaries are awarded on a discretionary basis following rigorous and objective means testing. Parents will be required to provide proof of their income, assets, expenditure and liabilities. The level of support varies according to parental need. Before the offer of a bursary is confirmed, an interview may be required with the Bursar. All bursary awards are confidential and are subject to annual review of parental means and may be varied depending on changing parental circumstances.
