2020 Wellington Scholarship Programme now open for applications

WCIH WellingtonCollegeHZ 2020-10-11

Wellington firmly believes that every child should be provided with world-class opportunities not only in academics, but also in a range of non-academic and extracurricular programmes.

In order to recognise and reward the pursuit and achievement of excellence in our pupils, and to make a Wellington education accessible to a broader range of pupils throughout Hangzhou and surrounding regions, we are proud to offer a range of scholarships and awards. Whether through tuition reduction or providing additional opportunities to demonstrate talent and leadership within the community; scholarships and awards provide a unique opportunity for talented pupils. In addition, scholarships and awards may be further complemented by a means tested bursary.

Below we will introduce the scholarships and awards on offer for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Academic Scholarship Programme

Wellington is proud to introduce the Academic Scholarship Programme for pupils who will enter in the academic year starting August 2020. The programme recognises outstanding academic achievement and all-round excellence.

Awards criteria

Awards of up to 50%* of the annual tuition fees will be offered to applicants who can demonstrate a consistent and proven track record of excellent academic performance.

Applicants should also have:

  • leadership potential

  • an exemplary behavioural record including unfailing kindness to their peers

  • an ability to act as a mentor and role model

Those pupils awarded a scholarship will be expected to fully engage with every aspect of school life and the Wellington community, including participation in sports teams and performing arts activities.

Awards of up to 100%* of the tuition fees will be available to successful applicants in Year 7 or above in August 2020. Applicants will be expected to have recorded previous academic results and CAT4 assessment data (administered as a part of the admissions process) that indicate they will achieve strong IGCSE results.

* We wish to give the opportunity of a Wellington education to outstanding pupils whose families would not be able to afford our full fees. The value of the award will be based upon the applicant family’s annual net income.

How to apply

Applicants must submit a handwritten personal statement on one A4 page outlining why they believe they would make a good Wellington scholar. Scanned copies of the personal statement should be submitted to the Admissions Office by email to; admissions.wcih@wellingtoncollege.cn. Successful candidates will be invited to a scholarship assessment day which will be held at the school shortly after submission.

Sports Award and Music Scholarships

Scholarships for Sports and Music are awarded to those pupils who will play a significant role in the life of the College. Scholars must show a high degree of ability in their chosen field whilst also demonstrating leadership in the encouragement of non-prize holding pupils. Prizes provide free specialist tuition or coaching and other benefits for pupils. In addition, prizes may be complemented by a bursary on the basis of a means test.

Awards criteria

  • Music scholarship candidates should have been studying their instrument for at least five years and standard should be around the level of ABRSM Grade 6 or above

  • Sports Award candidates should be able to demonstrate outstanding achievement in at least one sport played at Wellington (primarily football, swimming, basketball, touch rugby, netball or athletics) and should have competed at a county, regional, and/or national level when compared with UK standards

Candidates awarded Music or Sports prizes are still required to meet Wellington’s academic entry requirements.

*Further details are set out in our 'Applying to Wellington' handbook, which can be obtained from our Admissions team by calling +86 8329 6366 or via email at admissions.wcih@wellingtoncollege.cn

How to apply

Pupils who would like to apply for a Sports Award or Music Scholarship should prepare and submit the following documents:

  • College application (including all supporting documents)

  • Music – 200-word personal statement

  • Sport – a CV summarising the candidate’s sporting activities and achievements over the last two years.

A preliminary review of the application will be conducted by the relevant department. Selected candidates will be invited to an assessment day, audition or trial.

Terms & Conditions

Scholarships and prizes will only be awarded if candidates of sufficient merit present themselves.

Awards and prizes will be reviewed annually. Retention of an award will be dependent upon consistently excellent performance levels, good conduct and evidence of real contribution to the life of the college.

Bursaries

We want to attract the best pupils at Wellington. Bursaries are available to families applying for Year 1 and above and awarded where there is an obvious need to supplement the tuition fees and are also open to include those pupils who apply for various scholarships. All applications are means-tested. Applying for a Bursary need not be a daunting process but does follow rigorous and objective means testing. For more information please contact the Admissions Team by calling +86 8329 6366 or via email at admissions.wcih@wellingtoncollege.cn.
