Huili Nantong

Huili Nantong is well on its way to opening  and  will be committed to providing a world-class  bilingual education for Chinese pupils aged 3 to 18. The school will nurture children as they  develop the five characteristics that make up the Huili Identity: being Inspired, Intellectual, Independent, Individual and Inclusive, while also becoming outstanding Chinese citizens with a global perspective when they graduate.

Located in the Su-Xi-Tong Science and Technology Industrial Park, across the Yangtze River from Suzhou and Shanghai, Huili Nantong has a total planned area of 80,000 square metres  and will be the largest school in the entire Wellington College China family. It will feature  state-of-the-art teaching areas, boarding accommodation, a 600-seat theatre, two  libraries, an indoor sports hall, an eight-lane  swimming pool, a 400-metre athletics track and outdoor football and rugby pitches.

The school expects to start admitting pupils from  September 2022. With an enrolment capacity of over 2000, the school will also offer boarding  options for up to 800 pupils, starting from primary school age. Huili Nantong is set to be the group’s largest boarding school.

Our Story

Wellington College in England was founded by Queen Victoria in 1859 as a national monument to Britain’s most renowned military figure, the Duke of Wellington, Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, who also served the country with distinction twice as Prime Minister.

Over 160 years later, the College is one of the most respected schools in the United Kingdom and one of its greatest educational institutions;pioneering, innovating and transforming education for girls and boys.

In 2009, Wellington College China launched the Wellington Family of schools in China. In 2018, Wellington College China launched Huili School and  Huili Nursery in Shanghai and Hangzhou with the aim of providing one of the best bilingual educations  in China. In just three years, Huili has become the benchmark of bilingual education, widely recognized  in the market and highly respected and praised by parents.

Huili schools are committed to delivering the world's  top immersive bilingual education.  They combine the best elements of Western and Chinese education, producing globally minded graduates who are fluent in both Chinese and English. Pupils learn to think deeply in both languages while cultivating a strong sense of their Chinese identity. The ultimate objective is to help pupils develop the skills to thrive in an increasingly globalised world. They will be able to work and live abroad confidently and competently. When they return to China, they will contribute steadfastly to the nation's prosperity. China, after all, is a country brimming with opportunities.

The Huili curriculum

Huili  Nursery Nantong will adopt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum from England for pupils aged 3-6 and use the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) immersive bilingual teaching approach to develop English language acquisition for pupils of compulsory education age in China. In line with requirements set by the Chinese government for all educational programmes, the school will add specific school-based subjects such as performing arts and design  technology as well as provide a wide range of pastoral care. A variety of extracurricular and cross-curricular activities will allow pupils to make strides in their academic studies while simultaneously developing their other interests. For High School pupils, the school will utilise the widely recognised  IGCSE examinations. The school will provide full and personalised support to pupils and equip them with the tools to reach their full potential.

Lessons at Huili Nantong will follow the requirements set out by the Chinese national curriculum and are enquiry-based with a focus on improving pupils’ understanding. In addition to regular courses like Chinese, English, mathematics, science, Chinese social studies (encompassing history, geography and social studies), music, sports and art, pupils also learn  through more distinctive Huili courses, such as theme, wellbeing, drama, English social studies, swimming, design and technology, etc.

Apart from Chinese and Chinese social studies, all classes will be delivered bilingually or in English.

We will also provide a wide range of school-based co-curricular activities. These may include activities such as Lego, robotics, debate, English drama, kayaking, archery, pop band and orchestra. These courses are an important part of the school experience and integral to our holistic educational offering. As such, children are expected to take part in afternoon sessions to broaden their horizons and increase their interests.

All Huili Nantong language learning objectives in Chinese or English will be included in the design of teaching objectives for each subject. In class, teachers will ask open-ended questions to stimulate pupils' critical thinking and improve their ability to analyse problems and express themselves in both Chinese and English.

Our teachers

Huili Nantong will receive full support from its sister schools in Shanghai and Hangzhou to ensure its teaching quality is excellent when it opens.

Our teachers will be passionate educators from all over the world. They will all have appropriate teaching qualifications and rich teaching experiences.

Our English-speaking teachers will come mostly from the UK or other native English-speaking countries. Some will also have experience in Chinese schools. Our Chinese teachers will come from a range of backgrounds, including international and bilingual schools from all over China as well as schools within the Wellington College China  family. Before starting at Huili Nantong, each member of staff will go through strict recruitment protocols and background checks to ensure your children are safe and secure.

Boarding

Huili Nantong will welcome boarding applications from pupils in grade 1 upwards in its first year. With space  for up to 800 pupils eventually, the boarding experience will  support the development of the Huili  Identity of being  Inspired, Intellectual, Independent, Individual and Inclusive as well as celebrate the House system that permeates all Huili schools. The boarding experience will be like a ‘home away from home’ for our pupils in a safe and protected environment within the school campus.
