China Breaks Box Office Records as U.S. Limps Along

VANITYFAIR

This past weekend the number one film at the domestic box office made a little over $2 million. The title? The Croods 2. It was released 12 weeks ago.

The landscape is vastly different in China. Despite restrictions on theaters of 75 percent capacity in most of the country, and at 50 percent in areas more at risk to COVID-19, this Lunar New Year holiday weekend broke records, with a tally equalling $775 million.

Of that, according to Variety, a massive $424 million (2.74 billion in Chinese yuan) went to the action-comedy Detective Chinatown 3, directed and co-written by Chen Sicheng. (Note: The Hollywood Reporter has the number a little lower, at $397 million.) Second place went to a time travel comedy Hi, Mom, written and directed by its lead actress Jia Ling.

To put that $424 million in perspective, it wallops the domestic record of opening weekends, the impressive $357 million for Avengers: Endgame. As Variety points out, Detective Chinatown 3 has earned $100 million more than Tenet's worldwide release in just three days, and has tripled Wonder Woman 1984's global take.

Detective Chinatown 3 stars Wang Baoqiang and Liu Haoran as two madcap police officers who have adventures in foreign lands. The first film, from 2015, brought them to Thailand, and the second, from 2018, sent the pair to New York City. The newest one takes them to Tokyo, and action star Tony Jaa makes an appearance. The film was shot with IMAX cameras, with $24 million coming from large format screenings, a highest ever in China.

In 2020, the number one worldwide box office winner, by a substantial margin, was the historical action picture The Eight Hundred, a Michael Bay-esque telling of a battle from the Second Sino-Japanese War. It's cumulative number was $472.5 million, so likely far less than Chinatown Detective 3 when it finishes its run.

VANITYFAIR

This past weekend the number one film at the domestic box office made a little over $2 million. The title? The Croods 2. It was released 12 weeks ago.

box office

表示“售票处;票房”,英文解释为“the place at a theatre, cinema/movie theater, etc. where the tickets are sold举个🌰:

The movie has been a huge box-office success (= many people have been to see it).

The landscape is vastly different in China. Despite restrictions on theaters of 75 percent capacity in most of the country, and at 50 percent in areas more at risk to COVID-19, this Lunar New Year holiday weekend broke records, with a tally equalling $775 million.

landscape

表示“(陆上,尤指乡村的)风景,景色”,英文解释为“everything you can see when you look across a large area of land, especially in the country”。

tally /ˈtælɪ/

1)作名词,表示“记录,计数,比分;积分表;账”,英文解释为“A tally is a record of amounts or numbers which you keep changing and adding to as the activity which affects it progresses.”

They do not keep a tally of visitors to the palace, but it is very popular.

相符”,英文解释为“If one number or statement tallies with another, they agree with each other or are exactly the same. You can also say that two numbers or statements tally.”

Its own estimate of one hundred tallies with that of another survey.

As Variety points out, Detective Chinatown 3 has earned $100 million more than Tenet's worldwide release in just three days, and has tripled Wonder Woman 1984's global take.

put sth in(to) perspective

表示“客观地比较;客观地审查”,英文解释为“to compare something to other things so that it can be accurately and fairly judged”举个🌰:

Total investments for this year reached $53 million, and, to put this into perspective, investments this year were double those made in 2013.

wallop /ˈwɒləp/

表示“(在竞赛、比赛等中)彻底击败,大胜”,英文解释为“to defeat sb completely in a contest, match, etc. ”举个🌰:

We walloped them 5–0.

take

熟词僻义,作名词,表示“收取,收入”,英文解释为“money that is received from sales or as payment for entrance to an event”举个🌰:

The box office take was huge for the new show.

The film was shot with IMAX cameras, with $24 million coming from large format screenings, a highest ever in China.

madcap

表示“(行为或计划)鲁莽的,愚蠢的,荒唐的”,英文解释为“used to describe silly and funny behaviour or a plan that is very silly and funny and unlikely to succeed”,如:the madcap antics of the clowns 小丑们愚蠢可笑的动作。

-esque

-esque表示“...特色的,...风格的,...式的”,英文解释为“in the manner or style of a particular person, group, or place”,如:Kafkaesque (= in the style of the writer Franz Kafka ) 卡夫卡式的(指具有小说家卡夫卡的风格);

cumulative

表示“累积的”,英文解释为“If a series of events have a cumulative effect, each event makes the effect greater.”

It is simple pleasures, such as a walk on a sunny day, which have a cumulative effect on our mood.

run

熟词僻义,表示“(一部戏的)连续上演(期)”,英文解释为“the period during which a play is performed”举个🌰:

The musical's London run was a disaster.
