Meet the men and women interpreting for the world's most powerful people

ABC NEWS

Posted 31 DecDecember 2018

Charles Qin knows the pressure of being the man in the middle.

He is one of Australia's top interpreters, having been the intermediary translating discussions for four Australian prime ministers in China.

"It is a very high-pressure job — if a leader is discussing topics that are very sensitive and they're not disclosing it to you [in advance], you have to listen very very carefully," Mr Qin says.

He has been privy to high-stakes discussions with some of the world's most powerful people — where success can hinge on a choice of words.

"We all know former prime minister Kevin Rudd speaks Chinese, and he had certain preferences for the words, so if the terms I used were not the words he was thinking, he would come back to them again and again and again," he says.

Australian ministers coming to China have been known to occasionally put local interpreters on the spot.

Barnaby Joyce caused confusion at a business breakfast in Beijing in 2015 when he kept referring to "battered savs".

The interpreter eventually translated it as a hot dog.

"In interpreting school there was one trick they taught you — if you hear a joke you can't translate, you say, 'the speaker just told a joke, please laugh,'" says Rex Chen, a Beijing-based interpreter.

A high-profile gig

In China, interpreters tend to have a higher profile than in most other countries because they are present at all major political events and every time a Chinese leader meets a foreign dignitary.

As a result, some have developed a cult following among the country's tens of millions of English students.

Zhang Lu, the interpreter for Premier Li Keqiang, is lauded online by fans for her beautiful translations of Chinese idioms, although it is believed they are often prepared rather than being translated on the fly.

"There's some sort of mystique associated with this ability to render a message into another language," Mr Chen says.

"People aspire to that."

Australian governments have long hoped to encourage Asian language learning, but visiting politicians and business figures still largely rely on locally engaged interpreters to relay their messages when in China.

"People from another country may speak their own mother tongue, they may speak English, but it's much more than just speaking two languages to be a good interpreter or translator," Mr Qin says.

With so much nuance and cultural context involved, he says, it is more important than ever that Australians can speak for their leaders to ensure their carefully crafted messages are not lost in translation.
