My name is Sam Yam, I’m an assistant professor at NUS

我是任启智,是新加坡国立大学商学院的一名助理教授


I do research on ethics and decision making

and I also teach leadership and ethics in the School

Innovation to me means that an individual employee

is able to connect two previously unforeseen different objects

or ideas, and use them to form a useful

product or plan for the company

I actually don’t think we can teach innovation, per se

But I know a lot of research and teaching that focuses on

on how to facilitate conditions in the workplace

that can allow individual employees to be more innovative

For example, research finds that, if a workplace has

a lot of rules - a lot of bureaucratic stuff in the company

employees tend to be less innovative, less creative, as a result

If you look at companies in the world, let’s say Google

that actually allow employees to spend 20% of their free time

and they are one of the most innovative companies
